Day With(out) Art 2022:

An International Day of Action and Mourning

In 1989, in response to the worsening AIDS crisis, Visual AIDS organized the first Day With(out) Art. A call to action that would celebrate the lives and achievements of lost colleagues and friends, encourage caring for all people with AIDS, educate diverse publics about HIV infection, and find a cure.

Coinciding with World AIDS Day, Visual AIDS organizes annual observances of Day With(out) Art, creating and distributing free video programs to universities, museums, art institutions, and AIDS organizations to be screened on or around December 1.

Day With(out) Art Programming at the Asheville Art Museum

The Asheville Art Museum is proud to partner with Western North Carolina Aids Project (WNCAP) and Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2022. The day will begin with a presentation of Being & Belonging, a program of seven short videos highlighting under-told stories of HIV and AIDS from the perspective of artists living with HIV across the world.

The program features newly commissioned work by Camila Arce (Argentina), Davina “Dee” Conner and Karin Hayes (USA), Jaewon Kim (South Korea), Clifford Prince King (USA), Santiago Lemus and Camilo Acosta Huntertexas (Colombia), Mikiki (Canada), and Jhoel Zempoalteca and La Jerry (México).

From navigating sex and intimacy to confronting stigma and isolation, Being & Belonging centers the emotional realities of living with HIV today. How does living with HIV shift the ways that a person experiences, asks for, or provides love, support, and belonging? The seven videos are a call for belonging from those that have been stigmatized within their communities or left out of mainstream HIV/AIDS narratives.

Being & Belonging will be on continuous loop from noon until 9pm in the Museum’s multipurpose space on Level 1. The film will also loop during Museum hours on December 2 to December 4.

Posters located throughout the atrium share HIV-related statistics and data. Each of the five posters contain QR codes that link to audio recordings of related conversations between HIV+ individuals living in Western North Carolina.

Visual AIDS is a New York-based nonprofit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over.
