We've finished our winter hiking series!  Check our website in June for details on our summer hiking schedule.

Hiking Schedule

Get Outside WNC leads 5-hike series throughout the year.  Usually, hikes are scheduled every other Sunday of each month and cost $10 in cash to attend.  Hikes will begin at 2pm and the group will meet in a well-marked parking area.  Liability waivers will be collected before hiking.

Summer 2024

June 15th

Hike: Graveyard Fields

Mileage: 3.0

Difficulty: Easy to Medium

Graveyard Fields is an excellent summer hike for families.  Located off the Blue Ridge Parkway, this well-manicured hike features a picturesque waterfall with an excellent swimming area, along with miles and miles of exposed mountain bald covered in wild blueberries.  Optionally, join us after this hike for a treat at Black Bear Coffee Co.

June 22nd

Hike: Black Balsam

Mileage: 3.7

Difficulty: Medium

This trail showcases some of the best views across all of WNC.  With rolling incline across sloping mountain balds, hikers experience view after view of surrounding pinnacles.  Part of the larger Art Loeb Trail, this out and back path winds to the top of Tennent Mountain.  

July 6th

Hike: Gorges State Park Falls
Mileage: 3.9

Difficulty: Medium to Hard

This trail features several of Gorges State Park waterfalls.  Including the impressive sights of Rainbow Falls, Turtleback Falls, and Drift Falls, this out and back guides hikers along the Horsepasture River and includes several swimming holes.  Optionally, join us after this hike for a treat at Cognative Brew House.

July 13th

Hike: Roan Mountain

Mileage: 4.7

Difficulty: Medium to Hard

Located right along the border between Tennessee and North Carolina, Roan Mountain features unbeatable views.  With it's high elevation, exposed peaks, and yearly blooming of wildflowers, this trail stands apart from others.  This path takes hikers along the Appalachian Trail, a 200+ route following the Appalachian mountains.  Hikers will ascend Jane Bald and Grassy Ridge Bald.

July 27th

Hike: John Rock
Mileage: 5

Difficulty: Hard

John Rock packs the punch of Looking Glass Rock - without all of the tourists.  This loop leads hikers through thick foliage toward an expansive cliff face with priceless views.  Views of the surrounding mountains, as well as the exposed rock of Looking Glass can be seen.  Gorgeous year-round, this hike is truly a classic.  Optionally, join us after hiking for a treat at Quotations Coffee Cafe.
