Hospitality Workers Date Night

The cost of living in Asheville is the highest in North Carolina, and many hospitality workers are paid below or just at a livable wage. To appreciate their work, the museum will host a Hospitality Workers Date Night event on Thursday, October 5. General admission will be free to hospitality workers.

Thursday Night Live on the Sculpture Terrace: Enjoy an evening of live music on the Museum’s Sculpture Terrace featuring DJ MOJAV. He is the host of Bouncie House on 103.3 Asheville FM. You can listen to his funky experimental music on the station during Saturday nights from 1–3am. For more information visit ashevillefm.org.

Coloring and Cocktails: Join us at the Perspective Café to relax and and unwind by coloring-in paintings from our featured exhibitions and Collection! Express yourself and add your own colors. Enjoy our evening’s signature cocktail and other drink specials to enhance your visit.

In Conversation: A Clear Rainbow: Deborah Czeresko (winner of Blown Away season 1) and Tim Tate (director of the Washington Glass School) will have a discussion on their long history of using glass sculpture to highlight LGTBQ rights. Both speakers will present images of their earlier works, discuss their journey in the world of glass and art, with a dedicated Q & A at the end.

Makerspace: Printmaking with Produce: Led by Learning & Engagement Staff, this drop-in style open studio will teach our visitors how to create prints with everyday produce, like fruits and vegetables. Inspired by The Art of Food exhibition, on-view at the Museum, visitors will be encouraged to use natural materials to create unique art full of texture and pattern. Printmaking with Produce welcomes audiences of all ages and experience levels

ABOUT IN CONVERSATION GUEST SPEAKERS:

Deborah Czeresko is a New York City-based artist and designer, best known for their work with glass. Their work references food, art history, gender, and their experiences as a queer artist. Czeresko first started working with glass at the New York Experimental Glass Workshop, now known as Urban Glass in 1987 and received their MFA from Tulane University in 1992. In 2019 Czeresko captivated viewers as the winner of the inaugural season of Netflix’s Blown Away. As a glass artist, Czeresko creates work that challenges societal norms and speaks on queer issues. Her work references the traditions of Venetian glassblowing while also adding contemporary discussions on feminism and gender politics. Czeresko has most notably been shown in the Corning Museum of Glass, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Toledo Museum of art and theToyama Glass Art Museum. Czeresko is the recipient of various fellowships and residencies at several institutions including Tyler School of Art, UrbanGlass, LUCA School of Art, Belgium and College of Creative Studies, Detroit.

Tim Tate is a Washington, DC native, and has been working with glass as a sculptural medium for the past 35 years. He has shown nationally and beyond since the 1990’s, including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, Boca Raton Museum, Art Basel Scope in Switzerland, Art Miami during Art Basel-Miami, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Renwick Gallery, the Hermitage State Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia and commercial galleries from Washington, DC to London and Berlin. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship from the University of Sunderland, England in 2012. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Renwick Gallery, the Mint Museum, the Fuller Museum, the Katzen Art Center of American University, the Milwaukee Art Museum and Vanderbilt University Museum. Tim Tate has spent many years championing LGTBQ rights in all its forms. As a 40-year HIV+ Queer Man, he founded the Triangle Artist Group in the early 90’s and helped curate the very first HIV+ art show there. He is also the designer of the New Orleans AIDS Monument.
